¡Hola desde Guatemala! (Hello from Guatelama!)

We're in paradise!

We're in Antigua, Guatemala this week, visiting Tom & Jeanne, and are having a FABULOUS time!  We arrived in Guatemala City late on Saturday evening, and stayed at the incredible Real Guatemala Hotel Intercontinental.  Then Sunday and Monday we spent sight-seeing throughout the city, personally guided by Tom & Jeanne's hostess' sister-in-law.  We saw tons of museums, had wonderful food, and were toured around the city, before coming into the small city of Antigua, about 45 minutes from the capital.

Antigua is incredible: such beauty, serenity, and hospitality here.  Nearly everyone passing on the street greets each other; the city is kept quite clean; the mercado is full of folks selling anything and everything; people are always hanging out on the main square, located at the center of this 10 by 10 block city surrounded by volcanoes.  Life is wonderful here.

Yesterday we traveled to Monterico, on the coast, to enjoy a wonderfully lazy beach day.  We took a minibus (stuffed with folks from everywhere - tourists) for the 2 hour ride to the coast.  We crashed at a hotel on the beach, which provided beach chairs and a beautiful lunch.  The ride home was a bit more exciting - smaller bus (at least the engine wasn't as powerful) with just as many people ... slow trips up and down mountains (3+ hours getting back).  We then had drinks with Tom & Jeanne's hostess, Maria del Carmen.  (She is the director of the school in which Jeanne is studying while they're here.)

Today we had a FABULOUS walking tour of Antigua.  Such a beautiful place with incredible history...  More to come later.  We're taking a break this afternoon while Tom & Jeanne are with their respective Spanish tutors.  I am now hearing the start of a light rain shower, which I think is the second instance of rain since T&J got here on Feb. 1st.

As I said, more to come later (including lots of pictures)...  Just wanted to share that we're having a wonderful time in a beautiful place, and I am not looking forward to heading back to reality in a few days...  We'll certainly enjoy the time we have left here, and I'm sure we'll be back again someday!  :-)
